Foreign firms are keeping a close watch on the fate of Coca-Cola's bid for Chinese juice producer Huiyuan, as suspicions about economic nationalism are on the rise, a European business group said Tuesday.
"Economic nationalism appears to be a growing concern," said Joerg Wuttke, president of the European Chamber of Commerce, at the launch of the 2008 European Business in China Position Paper.
"Therefore we do watch the ongoing Coca-Cola Huiyuan case very closely to see if that is done by the law."

Foreign firms are often excluded from competing with local companies in areas such as standard setting, infrastructure business and the energy sector even though they offer more advanced technology and lower costs, he said.

"Economic nationalism... is primarily driven by economic interest groups that want to basically maintain monopolies or gain monopolies and try to exclude foreigners as competitive troubles," he added.

Coca-Cola announced last week plans to buy Hong Kong-listed Huiyuan Juice Group for 2.4 billion dollars, the US soft drink maker's largest ever acquisition in China.

The Chinese commerce ministry has said it will submit the acquisition to an anti-monopoly review once it receives Coca-Cola's application.

Meanwhile, some Chinese juice companies are reportedly planning to send a letter to the ministry to block the bid, arguing the purchase threatens to force them out of business.

No baby milk from China

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia does not import any baby milk powder from China.
Two infants died and more than 1,200 others in China fell sick or developed kidney stones after drinking the Sanlu-brand formula milk.
Food Safety and Quality Division director at the Health Ministry Noraini Othman said: "Malaysia has never imported baby milk powder from China."
The Sanlu milk powder was found to contain melamine, used as an ingredient in plastics, fertilisers and cleaning products.
Noraini assured consumers that the ministry would not allow the import of any milk powder from China as a precautionary measure.

Asthma Meds Not For Overweight Patients:

The inhaled steroids that are often used to treat asthma don't work as well in the overweight or obese.

The treatments are 40 percent less effective in these patients than in those of a healthy weight, said study author Dr. E. Rand Sutherland.

The combination of obesity and asthma appears to do something to limit the pathways by which steroids reduce inflammation.

About 20 million Americans have asthma, said Sutherland, and nearly half are overweight or obese, having a body-mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher.

Obesity has been associated with increasing inflammation in the body. It may be that the same processes that increase inflammation leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease may also be implicated in modifying steroid effects.

The more obese a person with asthma is, the less the expression of MKP-1 -- and the more inflammation, thus, is to suggest overweight patients with asthma lose weight. However,it can regain your responsiveness to glucocorticoids if you lose weight.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS: Local councils should lead

Look around the now situation, the health risks that come with garbage are numerous. So public should awareness of destruction to the environment should be heightened. Through the report of the solid waste and public cleaning management bill, seen the enviromental problem is more serious day by day. Malaysia also having this problem because we might see some people they like throw plastic bags and used tissue paper out of their car windows. Some even throw rubbish into the monsoon drain in front of their house rather than in their rubbish bin. Therefor, we should educate our young by getting schoolchildren involved in recycling and environmental awareness projects. Sincerly, The councils can also encourage households to leave garden waste such as cuttings and fallen leaves in large reusable heavy-duty garden refuse bags, again provided free to each household. Local councils can collect these garden trimmings every week or fortnightly to be turned into composting material on a large scale. It can be sold to the public at garden centres and nurseries. Or even can set up the recycling centres for people to dump recyclable materials. These facilities should be within easy reach of town centres, and be equipped with many industrial-sized containers for people to deposit paper, plastic, old clothes, glass bottles, old computers, unwanted household items or even garden waste. As conclusion do not just think about the enviroment but what is important is our co-operation action to solve the problem.

Jellyfish invasion: Just stay out of the water.
THE recent jellyfish invasion of the beaches of Kuantan has inadvertently revealed an interesting streak in our human nature.

Jellyfish is a sea creature which also consider as dangerous creature, because jellyfish that are beached can give a nasty sting before they dry out. That nasty sting will give out a poisoness liquid for victim. The hotels are right to initiate precautionary measures like having red flags on the beach when there is a known invasion of these sea creatures and also warning hotel guests through in-house notices. Besides that hotel staff should also be on alert just in case a guest or swimmer has an allergic reaction to the sting. Moreover, the hotel pool should have a wiser alternative and surely in a tourist spot such as Kuantan there are other outdoor activities and sights that could amuse both parent and child. However, the easiest cure for those victim been poison by jellyfish is vinegar. So, try to be careful when u are playing or swimming in the sea.

READER'S DIGEST(July 2008)

The article about how to build those muscles.
1)Increase your calcium intake
A calcium-rich diet (including dairy foods) during childhood and adolescence will protect your bones for life.
2)Try strength-training exercises
These help build strong bones and can be easily done at home using light weights or even your own body weight.
3)Avoid fizzy drinks
Colas contain phosphoric acid that can take calcium out of the body. Just two cans per day can have an effect.
4)Take a walk in the park
Walking is a great low-impact exercise. Aim for a moderate brisk pace for 30 minutes at least five times a week.
5)Build up your vitamin D levels
Vital for calcium absorption, your body can get enough vitamin D to last a year simply by enjoying 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight a day on your face and arms.
6)Watch your alcohol intake
Drinking alcohol to excess not only damages the cells that make new bone but also interferes with calcium absorption.
7)Give up smoking
Osteoporosis research has found that smoking lends to greater bone loss and increases the risk of fractures.

Meeting Danger on the Internet
by Debbie Lau

Teenagers often seem oblivious to the potential danger in their lives – even on the Internet. A recent survey of 1124 Singaporeans aged 12 to 17 years old found that nearly one in six had arranged face-to-face meetings with people they had met online. And of that number, 22 percent went to the meeting alone. Here are some tips to eliminate the danger:
1)Don’t be coerced into meeting someone against your will. “Resist the temptation,” Balhetchet advises. “More often than not, conversations online do not match up with expectations in reality.”
2)Beware if your online “friend” starts attacking your courage or your personality. “You must have confidence in yourself – there is nothing to prove to someone you don’t even know.”
3)“If you feel overwhelmed by a conversation, just switch it off,” Balhetchet suggests. Avoid that particular website or chatroom, or take a break if someone there makes you feel uncomfortable.
4)If you must meet the person face-toface, don’t go alone. Balhetchet also recommends carrying a mobile phone with a number ready that you can dial instantly should anything go wrong.
5)If the person you are chatting with is scaring you or making threatening remarks, report it to the police.

Castles : Tokyo
Edo Castle

Edo Castle (Edo-jo) was the home castle of the line of Tokugawa shoguns who ran the Edo government which ruled Japan for roughly 260 years (from the beginning of the 17th century until 1867). It was originally built in 1457 by the daimyo Ota Dokan, who was also well-known as a poet. As it was the castle of the founding shogun of the Edo government (Tokugawa Ieyasu), it became the building that symbolized the prestige of successive shoguns, and was also the center of political power. It was the largest castle in Japan in those days, with the inner compound measuring roughly 8 km in diameter, and the outer compound measuring around 16 km. The castle donjon with a five-tiered fade was an enormously high building with a stone wall measuring 51.5 m from ground level. This was destroyed, however, in the great fire of 1657. It is currently the Imperial Palace of the Emperor of Japan.

Comments:
It looks like a nice castle and the Edo castle was built in 1457 by daimyo Ota Dokan. The castle got many memorable meaning about the successive of shogun. It was the largest castle in japan and it was located in Tokyo. For those who are want to visit this castle, it will open every day except Mondays (if the Monday is a holiday, the following Tuesday), Fridays (except holidays), and the Emperor's Birthday, Dec. 28-Jan and the admission fee is free.

A year of happiness secured by a golden bird.
A wooden bird bringing good luck by turning last year's lies into this year's truths.

This is an event held at the shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (845-903) who is familiarly called Tenjin-sama. Dazaifu Tenmangu is the shrine which was constructed at the very spot where Michizane died. People receive wooden dolls carved in the shape of uso (bullfinch), known as a lucky bird, and pray for good fortune. The bullfinch is believed to be Tenjin-sama's messenger. These dolls are also sold at Yushima Tenjin Shrine and Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo, where long queues form to buy them.

Sugawara no Michizane was a scholar, poet and politician of the Heian Period, and is worshipped as a god of learning in Japan. He was an honest man, never telling lies and some say that the origin of usokae comes from the Japanese word uso meaning "lies," which also corresponds with the name of this bird. Everyone tells lies, whether they intend to or not, and in order to exchange "lies" told in the previous year for "truths," people bring their old wooden uso dolls to be exchanged for new ones.

The people gathering at the shrine greet one another with the words "Come! Let's exchange!," and exchange the wooden bullfinch dolls they are holding. What they are really looking for among the numerous bullfinch dolls is the golden bullfinch. Anyone who is lucky to get this golden bullfinch is considered to have a happy year ahead.

As this event coincides with the entrance exam season, an increasing number of students about to sit for their exams has been visiting the shrine in recent years to buy these dolls and make their dream of passing their exams come true.

On the same evening, a fire festival to drive away evil spirits, one of the three largest fire festivals of Japan, is held at the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The precincts of the shrine become enveloped in flames and smoke, making it a spectacular sight well worth seeing.

A procession of 1,000 samurai warriors staged at a world heritage site

The highlight of this festival is the procession called Hyakumono-Zoroe Sennin Gyoretsu of some 1,000 men dressed as samurai warriors on the 18th. Nikko Toshogu, which is registered as a World Heritage Site, is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo (Tokyo). This procession reproduces the scene of his grave being transferred from distant Shizuoka Prefecture to Nikko in accordance with Ieyasu's will.

The procession departs from a shrine called Otabisho by the Shinkyo Bridge located to the south of Futarasan-jinja Shrine. It is led by three portable shrines which carry the spirits of the three Shoguns, including Tokugawa Ieyasu. They are followed by Shinto priests on horseback and samurai warriors clad in full armor. There are no special attractions, but this enhances the grandiosity and elegance of the procession all the more, impressing the spectators with the dignity of the samurai warriors.

It is also worthwhile listening to the ancient court music and viewing the dance performances which are carried out upon the arrival of the portable shrines at Toshogu Shrine. The 17th features yabusame, with archers dressed in samurai style shooting at targets while on horseback. A similar procession is held in October but on about half the scale of the spring procession.

comment:
For me, the festival is so interesting to the tourists who are want to visit Japan. If I have a chance to go there, I will never miss it. From the article, I think it full with nostalgic historic because they are using a samurai outfit and in Japan, the samurai is a legend worrior. For who are interesting about this festival, it was held in 17th and 18th may every year at Nikko Toshgu Shrine.

Tissue engineering is the use of a combination of cells, engineering and materials methods, and suitable biochemical and physio-chemical factors to improve or replace biological functions. While most definitions of tissue engineering cover a broad range of applications, in practice the term is closely associated with applications that repair or replace portions of or whole tissues (i.e., bone, cartilage, blood vessels, bladder, etc.). Often, the tissues involved require certain mechanical and structural properties for proper functioning. The term has also been applied to efforts to perform specific biochemical functions using cells within an artificially-created support system (e.g. an artificial pancreas, or a bioartificial liver).

Usain Bolt (born 21 August 1986) is a Jamaican sprinter. Bolt holds the Olympic and world records for the 100 metres at 9.69 seconds, the 200 metres at 19.30 seconds and, along with his teammates, the 4x100 metres relay at 37.10 seconds, all set at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Bolt became the first man to win all three events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984, and the first man in history to set world records in all three at a single Olympics. His name and achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "'Lightning' Bolt". Bolt distinguished himself with a 200 m gold medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships, making him the competition's youngest-ever gold medallist. In 2004, at the CARIFTA Games, Bolt became the first junior sprinter to run the 200 m in under 20 seconds with a time of 19.93 s, breaking Roy Martin's world junior record by two-tenths of a second. Bolt also set competition records at a number of other junior events. Bolt turned professional in 2004 but missed most of his first two seasons due to injuries; he was eliminated in the first round of the 200 m heats at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In 2007, Bolt beat Don Quarrie's 200 m Jamaican national record with a run of 19.75 s. In May 2008, Bolt set his first 100 m world record with 9.72 s, improving upon his personal best of 9.76 s made earlier in the month.

'The Lesson'
"How long have you been working for the company?"
"I began last December, sir."
"In other words, it hasn't even been a year that you've worked here."
"It will be nine months next week, don Fernando."
"Well then: I've been with this firm for twenty seven years." He gave me another of those hard looks.
Since I felt he expected some reaction from me, I nodded my head, trying to show some kind of restrained admiration.
He slipped a small calculator out of his pocket.
"Twenty seven years, multiplied by twelve months, make a total of three hundred twenty four months. Three hundred twenty four months divided by nine months come out to thirty six. This means that I've been with the company thirty six times longer than you have. What's more, you are merely a common employee while I am the general manager. Lastly, you are only nineteen or twenty years of age, and I am fifty two. Isn't that so?"
"Yes, yes, of course."

Comment:
I had a nice laugh by reading this story. Fernando was portrayed as an irritable character and he was an example of how a boss should not be. I expected that Fernando would get some lesson from the young man and I was disappointed. However, it was quite interesting. Especially that the guy quits at the end and just moves on instead of learning the useless "lesson" from his boss. that's how it was with me.
of course, fernando's lessons are not presented by the boss today. they are presented by "career" articles in business week and yahoo news!
but anyone who thinks they would spit on Fernando, etc, is probably still in college listening to lectures about MLK and Thoreough, or has someone else paying their rent for them.

This story is insightful, but it seems to be a little cliched. A few errors in the grammar. A story that was enjoyably read till the end. Though, the last bit was disappointing and anticlimactic.

'Learning The Western Alphabet'

The hospital is on the far side of the university campus, on the lower slopes of Yue Lu mountain, and as we walk along the path between the blocks of flats everyone stares at us: why is a pretty young student like me walking next to this tall, big nosed, pink faced Foreigner? One peasant woman drops her basket, and vegetables roll all over the road in front of us.
'What are those long green things?' he asks, watching her as she scrambles to pick them up. Has he never seen bamboo shoots before?
'Why do you want to see acupuncture?' I wasn't planning to ask, it just came out of my mouth, in English.
'China is famous for it. I thought it might be fun to see.' Fun?
'It's for when you're ill, in pain,' I say. 'Not for show.' How could something so old fashioned and ordinary be special for him?
The hospital smells of herbal medicines, a sharp green smell that reminds me of childhood illnesses and my mother's cool hand on my hot forehead.

Comment:
I think that this is a wonderfully written story. And Ming Ming is so courageous!

But I found that the story was kind of one-sided. If this had been written by a Chinese person of the time, I think the story would have a totally different perspective to it.

First of all, there were quite a lot of references to when Martin and Ming Ming made love. At first, Martin said he wasn't going to last a year without sex. This made it sound as if he only had sex with Ming Ming because he lusted for it, not because he was in love. Even though later he did say he thinks he has fallen for her, I don't think his feelings were true. He may have just made himself think he is in love to feel okay about having sex with Ming Ming.

And secondly, about Ming Ming, she really is a brave and corageous girl. But I don't think the author fully understands the situation Ming Ming is in. It is later revealed that Ming Ming's family had been tortured and punished a lot during the cultural revolution. This would've obviously had a negative effect on her, and she would want to get away from her country. My parents are Chinese aswell, and they all made it out of the cultural revolution. But they know a lot of people who didn't. Many people had families who were killed, tortured and punished for having different beliefs etc. It's almost as if the government had made them hate their own country and want to move away. Ming Ming probably felt the same, with her dislike of the Chinese government, she wanted to move out of the country. Her parents also wanted her to move away as they wanted her to have a better life. Even though she said she was in love with Martin, that would've obviously been her instant reaction to him. She was influenced so much that she could make herself believe that she was in love with a foreigner. I don't think she was actually really in love with Martin, but because of her family past circumstances and also the chance to move out of China, she had unconciously made herself believe she was in love. It probably would've also been her first encounter with what she thought was 'love', as students back then were not allowed to date at all, let alone with a foreigner!
Still today, many many women from China marry just to get a visa and move out of their country.

But that's just all another perspective (:

MY FIRST DAY IN THE UNIVERSITY (NARRATIVE ESSAY)
Do you remember your first day in the university? Well, I remember my first day I was waiting all the summer to enter at the university. I felt excited and at the same time I was very nervous because it was my first day in the university and I didn't know any person. My first day in the university was good.
I didn't know how to arrive to my classroom. I was lost and I had to ask one person about the building where I was going to take classes. This person was very nice and told me the right direction. I walked to the building, and when I arrived I saw some people and I felt strange.
I approached to one girl and I asked for the classroom and we discovered that we where in the same group and I felt less nervous. I introduced myself and She also did it, her name was Yuriko. We came in the classroom and the time to start classes began.
When we began our classes, all our classmates were quiet, nobody talked. the teacher arrived early. she started the class and after that we introduced ourselves. Then I saw my others classmates and I looked at two girls they were Greta and Eli.
I approached with them and I talked with Greta and Eli . I introduced myself, then they did the same and we began to know more about each other, like where we were from or what we did. After that, we spent the rest of the day together until we had to go home.
I am always going to remember that day because I had the opportunity to meet more people and the most important I met the best friends that I have ever had. Finally, I think that it is natural that on the first day we feel nervous, but the things always have a happy ending, that's why I say that my first day in the university was very good.

GETTING MARRIED AT AN EARLY AGE (Cause-Effect)
Why do young people get married at an early age? We are always searching a partner to be together forever, and share the life, but some people search for it too young. There are many causes to get married at an early age, but this time I will only show you the most common ones.

The principal and most common cause is pregnancy. Most of the time when a couple has sexual relationships without any kind of protection is because they are too young and do not have much information about that. Families prefer to keep appearances, and they force them to get married.

Another cause is the presence of false expectations. It is that we always search security, protection, and confidence; and young people think that they will have those things in a marriage. The couple thinks that living together will be easy and they will have a good marriage. Many people also think that by having a marriage they could have a better life.

Finally, another cause can be a hasty marriage. The couple gets married without having enough knowledge about the other, and conflicts are created when living together. Or they find that it was not what they really expected in a couple.

Young people get married at an early age for many reasons and the most common are pregnancy, false expectations, and a hasty marriage. Exist more reasons, but those are the principal ones. Young couples should think better before doing that.

MY COMMENT:
getting married in the early age???
it's sound good....
because we can live together with people that we really love...
we can share our problem together..
and face the difficulties together and forever...
is it true???? better we think it twice...
for those who are planning to get married in the early age better you stop it..
when you are getting married you will face a lot of difficulties and most of the young people cannot face it...a lot of responsible and then the problem become uncontrollable when you have children....
what are the main purpose that make you plan to get married in the early age..
if you feel you are lonely you remember you still have your family and friends who can always be with you...
if you think that is the most enjoyable thing...
remember there are a lot of thing that you never explore yet..
so make sure you are really ready and think it again...
now put it aside...
focus on your future... never mind if you already have your own couple or your future husband or future wife...
but ask him or her to wait until the suitable time or age...
hehe...
that all from me..
enjoy yourself...

Their mother is ill and needs constant care and nursing. She is aneamic due to malnourishment and she grows weaker and weaker with each passing day. Their father, who has been out of work for months, is in a permanent drunken stupor, from which he arises occasionally to shout at his family.

Women pray to a rock for the safety of the fishermen.

With two younger sisters to take care of as well as their mother, life for Lila and Hari is not easy. Their father is not very useful as he is often away at the local toddy shop, getting drunk. There is a constant need for money as the family is almost always in debt. Then one day, Hari decides he has had just about enough and leaves for Bombay– the Bombay where dreams come true and ambition yields.

Lila is left alone to manage her sisters Bela and Kamal, as well as her mother, and somehow keep the family strings together. Help comes from an unexpected source, the rich DeSilva's. Meanwhile, Hari is new in the great city of Bombay, and all alone. A kind restaurant proprietor, Jagu, takes pity on him and welcomes him to work in his restaurant, Sri Krishna Eating House. There, Hari builds a strong friendship with Mr. Panwallah, the lovable watch repairer whose shop is just beside Jagu’s. Through his experience with Mr. Panwallah and Jagu and the chain of events that take place in Bombay, Hari realises that he should return to his village with savings and help his family overcome their hardships.

Meanwhile, Lila, Bela and Kamal are forced to admit their sick mother in town hospital through the help of the DeSilvas. Their father turns over a new leaf, and accompanies their mother throughout her 7 month treatment without drinking and without having any debts. While Hari returns, he returns as a child who is adapted to the changing environment like the birds that are symbolized.

Anita Desai has explicitly described in her very own style of writing ,how Hari in the dilapidated conditions of the Sri Krishna Eating House finds warmth and affection through Mr Panwallah-owner and watch mender of the Ding-Dong watch shop .Mr Panwallah instills confidence in Hari and comforts him when he is terribly home sick.He even gives Hari a vivid and inspiring future and teaches him watch mending .This shows that even in one of the most busiest , rickety and ramshackled cities such as Bombay there is still hope ,love and affection.i like to read this novel because it showthe real life of family in india, who struggle i their life

THE FIRST TIME WHEN I FALL IN LOVE...

By Fernando Muro Nuñez
When you are in high school, six months can feel like forever. Just remember back to a week before graduation and how slow those last few days moved. I know it is hard to imagine but I dated someone for almost one year. Although there have been many life defining moments, breaking up with Viri was by far the biggest challenge I have ever had to face. My ability to move past her impacted my life in ways you cannot imagine.

Viri and I met in the summer of 2005 during a family reunion. At that moment I felt what it was like to have butterflies in my stomach and the racing heart when her eyes caught my own. I felt as if I were in a romantic movie, Or a chapter of a soupopera, even Ihate soupoperas. I fell harder andharder in love for her and she did the same. For the firsts months, I felt nothing could go wrong, yet I was oblivious.

Viri and I embarked on a 11 months relationship based on fighting and lack of trust. It became more of a chore, rather than a choice, to be together. There were too many nights of tears, rather than smiles. It is incredible how someone can be everything you want but can’t be at the same time. After way to long I realized that I no longer longed to be with Viri. I became dependent on Viri to make me happy. I needed her to be there all the time.

When Viri and I realized what it was we had become, I made the decision to leave behind that part of my life. It was that single conversation that changed my life dramatically. I realized after my decision how far from my friends I really had moved. I now know that true happiness comes from within a person, not based on another individual.

But now I felt me much better I guess that time cure any hurt, even though I would do it again, je je je!!!

MY COMMENT:

fall in love???
Have you experienced it before??
hmm...
it is pain...
love is pain...
you cannot concentrate what you are doing at that moment..
feel uncontrolled..you seem in the other world..
the only thing that in your mind is the person that you love...
every time you thinking of him or her.....
it is very painful when someone that you loved didn't know that you loved him or her... i said that from my friends experience...
my experience???
keep it secret..hihi
but be careful...
don't only thing about that person..
you have something else to do with...
sometime people who are falling in love will far from the old world..
i mean...his friend family and others..

the problem is you...
and how to handle it..
love make the world...
we must love each other...

do you know what is imsomnia..or maybe you one of the person that get imsomnia?

Insomnia is a symptom of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in year 2007, approximately 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia on a regular basis each year. Insomnia occurs 1.4 times more commonly in women than in men

there are several different degrees of insomnia, about three types of insomnia have been clearly identified: transient, acute, and chronic.

Transient insomnia lasts from days to weeks. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression, or by stress. Its consequences - sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance - are similar to those of sleep deprivation.
Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of between three weeks to six months.
Chronic insomnia lasts for years at a time. It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include sleepiness, muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue; but people with chronic insomnia often show increased alertness. Some people that live with this disorder see things as though they were happening in slow motion, whereas moving objects seem to blend together. Can cause double vision

The National Sleep Foundation's 2002 Sleep in America poll showed that 58% of adults in the U.S. experienced symptoms of insomnia a few nights a week or more. Although insomnia was the most common sleep problem among about one half of older adults (48%), they were less likely to experience frequent symptoms of insomnia than their younger counterparts (45% vs. 62%), and their symptoms were more likely to be associated with medical conditions, according to the 2003 poll of adults between the ages of 55 and 84.

In many cases, insomnia is caused by another disease or psychological problem. In this case, medical or psychological help may be useful.

A recent study found that cognitive behavior therapy is more effective than hypnotic medications in controlling insomnia. In this therapy, patients are taught improved sleep habits and relieved of counter-productive assumptions about sleep. Hypnotic medications are equally effective in the short term treatment of insomnia but their effects wear off over time due to tolerance. The effects of cognitive behavior therapy have sustained and lasting effects on treating insomnia long after therapy has been discontinued.

Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to get rest. All sedative drugs have the potential of causing psychological dependence where the individual cannot psychologically accept that they can sleep without drugs. Certain classes of sedatives such as benzodiazepines and newer nonbenzodiazepine drugs can also cause physical dependence which manifests in withdrawal symptoms if the drug is not carefully titrated down.

In comparing the options, a systematic review found that benzodiazepines and nonbenzodiazepines have similar efficacy which was not significantly more than for antidepressants. Benzodiazepines did not have a significant tendency for more adverse drug reactions

A drug, broadly speaking, is any chemical substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. There is no single, precise definition, as there are different meanings in medicine, government regulations, and colloquial usage.

In pharmacology, Dictionary.com defines a drug as "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being." Drugs may be prescribed for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.

Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior. Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation.

Drugs are usually distinguished from endogenous biochemicals by being introduced from outside the organism.[citation needed] For example, insulin is a hormone that is synthesized in the body; it is called a hormone when it is synthesized by the pancreas inside the body, but if it is introduced into the body from outside, it is called a drug.[citation needed]

Many natural substances such as beers, wines, and some mushrooms, blur the line between food and drugs, as when ingested they affect the functioning of both mind and body.

A medication or medicine is a drug taken to cure and/or ameliorate any symptoms of an illness or medical condition, or may be used as preventive medicine that has future benefits but does not treat any existing or pre-existing diseases or symptoms.

Dispensing of medication is often regulated by governments into three categories — over-the-counter (OTC) medications, which are available in pharmacies and supermarkets without special restrictions, behind-the-counter (BTC), which are dispensed by a pharmacist without needing a doctor's prescription, and Prescription only medicines (POM), which must be prescribed by a licensed medical professional, usually a physician.[citation needed]

In the UK, BTC medicines are called pharmacy medicines which can only be sold in registered pharmacies, by or under the supervision of a pharmacist, these medications are designated by the letter P on the label, the precise distinction between OTC and prescription drugs depends on the legal jurisdiction.[citation needed]

Medications are typically produced by pharmaceutical companies and are often patented to give the developer exclusive rights to produce them, but they can also be derived from naturally occurring substance in plants called herbal medicine.[citation needed] Those that are not patented (or with expired patents) are called generic drugs since they can be produced by other companies without restrictions or licenses from the patent holder.

Drugs, both medicinal and recreational, can be administered in a number of ways:

Orally, as a liquid or solid, that is absorbed through the stomach.
Inhaled, (breathed into the lungs), as a vapor.
Injected as a liquid either: intramuscular, intravenous, intraperitoneal, intraosseous.
Rectally as a suppository, that is absorbed by the colon.
Vaginally as a suppository, primarily to treat vaginal infections.
Bolus, a substance into the stomach to dissolve slowly.
Insufflation, or snorted into the nose.
Many drugs can be administered in a variety of ways
Recreational drugs use is the use of psychoactive substances to have fun, for the experience, or to enhance an already positive experience. National laws prohibit the use of many different recreational drugs and medicinal drugs that have the potential for recreational use are heavily regulated. Many other recreational drugs on the other hand are legal, widely culturally accepted, and at the most have an age restriction on using and/or purchasing them. These include alcohol, tobacco, betel nut, and caffeine products.

The spiritual and religious use of drugs has been occurring since the dawn of our species. Drugs that are considered to have spiritual or religious use are called entheogens. Some religions are based completely on the use of certain drugs. Entheogens are mostly hallucinogens, being either psychedelics or deliriants, but some are also stimulants and sedatives
Some governments define the term drug by law. In the United States, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act definition of "drug" includes "articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or other animals" and "articles (other than food) intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of man or other animals." Consistent with that definition, the U.S. separately defines narcotic drugs and controlled substances, which may include non-drugs, and explicitly excludes tobacco, caffeine and alcoholic beverage....

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away.
As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing.
He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother.
But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars."
The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose."
He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers.
As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home.
She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother."
She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.
The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.

this story makes me even miss my mum more and more..huhuhu

inspiring love story - The Rose Within

A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully and before it blossomed, he examined it.
He saw the bud that would soon blossom, but noticed thorns upon the stem and he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns? Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and just before it was ready to bloom... it died.
So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth, grow amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects.
We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never realize our potential.
Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns of another, and find the rose within them.

This is one of the characteristic of love... to look at a person, know their true faults and accepting that person into your life... all the while recognizing the nobility in their soul. Help others to realize they can overcome their faults. If we show them the "rose" within themselves, they will conquer their thorns. Only then will they blossom many times over.

Dads Blessings

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angry, he raised his voice to his father and said "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. And as he did, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss Spirit's blessings and answers to our prayers because they do not arrive exactly as we have expected?

TODAY'S's affirmation: "Today I look beyond the obvious and allow miracles to be created in my life."

VITAMINS??

There are 13 essential vitamins. That means they are needed for the body to function. They are:
Vitamin A
Vitamin C
Vitamin D
Vitamin E
Vitamin K
Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
Vitamin B3 (niacin)
Pantothenic acid
Biotin
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B12
Folate (folic acid)
Vitamins are grouped into two categories:
Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body's fatty tissue.
Water-soluble vitamins must be used by the body right away. Any left over water-soluble vitamins leave the body through the urine. Vitamin B12 is the only water-soluble vitamin that can be stored in the liver for many years.

Back to TopFunction
Each vitamin has specific functions. You can develop health problems (deficiency disease) if you do not get enough of a particular vitamin.

Vitamin A helps in the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth, bones, soft tissue, mucous membranes, and skin.

Vitamin B6 is also known as pyridoxine. The more protein a person eats, the more vitamin B6 is needed to help the body use the protein. Vitamin B6 helps form red blood cells and maintain brain function, among other things.

Vitamin B12, like the other B vitamins, is important for metabolism. It also helps form red blood cells and maintain the central nervous system.

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is an antioxidant that promotes healthy teeth and gums. It helps the body absorb iron and maintain healthy tissue. It also promotes wound healing.

Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin," since it is made by the body after being in the sun. Ten to 15 minutes of sunshine three times per week is enough to produce the body's requirement of vitamin D. This vitamin promotes the body's absorption of calcium, which is essential for the normal development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. It also helps maintain proper blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant also known as tocopherol. It plays a role in the formation of red blood cells and helps the body use vitamin K.

Vitamin K is not listed among the essential vitamins, but without it blood would not stick together (coagulate). Some studies suggest that it helps promote strong bones in the elderly.

Biotin is essential for the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates, and in the production of hormones and cholesterol.

Niacin is a B vitamin that helps maintain healthy skin and nerves. It is also has cholesterol-lowering effects.

Folate works with vitamin B12 to help form red blood cells. It is necessary for the production of DNA, which controls tissue growth and cell function. Any woman who is pregnant should be sure to get enough folate. Low levels of folate are linked to birth defects such as spina bifida. Many foods are now fortified with folic acid.

Pantothenic acid is essential for the metabolism of food. It is also plays a role in the production of hormones and cholesterol.

Riboflavin (B2) works with the other B vitamins. It is important for body growth and the production of red blood cells.

Thiamine (B1) helps the body cells change carbohydrates into energy. It is also essential for heart function and healthy nerve cells.

The Dangers of Alcohol

We've heard it said time and again that Indian society frowns upon women who drink. Well, if that wasn't enough motivation to quit, we understand - and even secretly approve (shush!). But that doesn't mean we endorse drinking. We don't. In fact, what we're telling you is to quit, or drink responsibly - not because of 'what-will-people-say'. But because, to put it simply, alcohol can kill.

Women have less tolerance to alcohol

They get drunk faster, and are faster affected by alcohol related diseases than men. Researchers found that women who regularly have two drinks a day face a significant risk of liver damage; men are at risk only after more than six drinks a day.

Why, why, WHY?

We're getting to it... Primarily, it's because women are smaller than men, so equivalent doses of alcohol produce higher levels of concentration in women's bodies.

Women have lower total body water content than men of the same size. Because of this, the concentration of alcohol in their blood is higher than that in men, after drinking the same amount of alcohol.

Women have less of Alcohol Dehydrogenase (a metabolizing enzyme that helps the body get alcohol out of its system) than men, so metabolisation of alcohol is slower in women.

Fluctuations in hormonal balance during menstruation further affect the metabolisation of alcohol

Drinking alcohol when pregnant can harm your baby

There are no two ways about it. Aznd no, it is not alright to take 'just a little drink' when pregnant. The alcohol in your blood can get carried into the baby's bloodstream causing birth difficulties, abnormalities and even a miscarriage. Plus, if you are planning to conceive, it is unclear how early into the pregnancy you must stop drinking. So it is best if you abstain from alcohol when planning a pregnancy, when pregnant and when breast feeding. The best gift you can give your child is that of good health.

Addiction

Women also become addicted more easily. And the result can be fatal: Female alcoholics are twice as likely to die of alcohol-related diseases as male alcoholics. What's more, a greater percentage of alcoholic women die from accidents, violence and suicide.

Liver Damage

The detrimental effects of alcohol on the liver are more severe for women than for men, and are caused after a much shorter period of heavy drinking.

Breast Cancer?

Drinking doesn't cause breast cancer but there is data which suggests that heavy drinking may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Weight Gain

Alcohol is so high in calories that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it can make you fat. They don't call it a 'beer belly' for nothing. If a fuller cheek, fatter waistline and chunky hips is what you fancy, have your daily glass of wine.

Ragged Appearance

Let's not pretend we don't know alcohol is bad for health. It destroys the body's cells, is addictive and causes nothing but damage. It inhibits the body's ability to use vitamins, proteins and calcium, resulting in dull skin and hair. If your alcohol intake has shot up and so have your dandruff and acne problems, you know why.

Lower Resistance

Abuse of alcohol can also lead to malnutrition and lowered resistance to disease, which presents an entirely new set of problems, not only to your looks but your health as well. No one can say for sure, but abstinence may be one of the ways a woman can stay healthier and looking younger longer. Besides, who needs pimples?

Hello there.. I would like to share my knowledge here about colours and their meanings. Maybe by reading this you can know your personality and the meaning of your favourite colour. Enjoy reading...

Black :
Indicates hatred, negativity, depression and miserly. When this appears in an aura, it is usually localized or appears as wisps floating through the aura.

Red :
Can indicate fear or anger.
Vibrant Red: When seen in a clear, vibrant and constant state, it represents fear or strong anxiety.
Dull Red: Generally represents anger. The deeper the red, the stronger the emotion.
A Consistent Red: A consistent dark red indicates a violent nature, a selfish and deceitful attitude.
A Red Spike: A spike of red, either vibrant or dull in appearance, indicates the same meanings as above. However instead of representing the consistent nature of the subject, the spike indicates the sudden emotion in the current conversation or situation the subject is engaged in at that moment.

Yellow :
Success, creativeness, jealousy, selfishness.
It has been my experience that a person with a thin line (1-4 inches) of yellow takes on the characteristics of this color in either their personal or professional life, but not both. A yellow aura wider then 5 inches, indicates characteristics in both aspects of the subjects life.
Vibrant Yellow: Clear yellow denotes intelligence, wisdom, and success.
Dull Yellow: A dull yellow indicates jealousy, a selfishness and negative outlook.

Green :
Healing
Light Green shades, indicate the onset or potential for injury and the subject should be cautious for the next few weeks.
Darker Green shades, generally indicate the injury has already occurred and is in the process of healing.

Blue :
Spiritually searching. A dissatisfaction or a feeling that there's something more.
Vibrant Blue: Pride, adoration, dedication.
A subject with any shade of the lighter blues is generally beginning their spiritual quest. (This does not mean a metaphysical quest, but rather a journey that will fill the 'missing' pieces of their current existence. This can just as easily be accomplished through any fundamental religion).
Darker blues typically indicate the subject has found their spiritual path and is continuing their education in the chosen realm.
Dull Blue: Taking life for granted, being too content, can appear to be selfish, narrow minded, arrogance, or self-righteous. There are many traits which accompany religious zeal, such as self-righteousness, dedication, pride, adoration and worship. These wide variations are usually indicated by some shade of blue.

Purple:
Heightened spiritual awareness, self-esteem, and high ideals.
Light Purple: People with lighter shades of purple are refining or polishing their spiritual nature. They are actively working on the balance of each aspect of their lives (personal, spiritual, professional), their attitudes and acceptance of others, and their existence with other life.
Mid-Dark: Teachers of their chosen spiritual path. They maybe working on a few issues of balancing, but for the most part, they are patient, kind, and willing to go out of their way for people.

White :
Indicates purity and/or protection. When detected in the outer layers of the aura, can indicate an area of the body which has been over energized, or is over active.

Pink :
Affection, love, enjoyment, pity, guilt.
Vibrant Pink: Indicates love, affection and a resilient temperament.
Dull Pink: Denotes 'care with caution', pity or guilt.

Orange:
Confidence, ambition, pride.
Vibrant Orange: Indicates ambition, pride, self-sufficiency.
Dull Orange: A lack of warmth, but a strong desire for success and popularity.

Brown :
Selfishness, deception, confusion or discouragement.
Light Brown: Indicates confusion or discouragement. The lack of confidence in ones self, the present situation or in the subject being addressed.
Dark Brown: Indicates selfishness, fault finding, and a tendency toward deception.

Enjoyed reading.. Now pass on the knowledge to your friends and family.

A good day... Most of us wuld have trouble sleeping in night especially in new places. Here are some tips on how we obtain a good sleep..

Work It Out
If you are in the habit of regular exercise, good for you! If you save your workouts for the evening, be sure to get your workouts in at least two hours before bedtime. If you exercise too close to bedtime, your body may still be screaming with endorphins, making it difficult to fall asleep.

Eat Early
Our bodies work hard to digest what we put in our stomachs. Try to eat dinner at least three hours before you go to bed, allowing enough time for your body and digestive system to mellow out.

Turn Down the Temperature
While you should experiment with your own comfort level, your room should be on the cooler side, with room temperature at 65 to 70 degrees F. Also important is proper ventilation. If at all possible, try to sleep with the window slightly open. Breathing in circulating air will help your body to breathe deeply and correctly.

Turn Off the Tube
Your brain needs time to wind down from all of the day’s activity. Turn off your TV in the bedroom. Whatever program you have on, your brain with be paying attention to the stimulus of the sound, sight and emotion. It is much easier to fall asleep with calming silence.

Slip Into Something More Comfortable
To get the best night’s sleep, it is recommended that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to bed. Tight and heavy clothing can not only make you hot (waking you up in the middle of the night), but it can also contribute to constricting blood flow to your extremities, waking you with “pins and needles.”

Get a Good Mattress
Since the average person spends nearly one-third of their life in bed, a good mattress is key. A mattress that does not offer enough support for your spine can lead to muscle fatigue and a poor night’s sleep. A good mattress will allow you to maintain the same natural spinal alignment that you have when standing. It is important to turn your mattress frequently to maintain even wear
and to give you the best support.

Practise it and maybe you can sleep better tonight... :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents' half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side before it passes over the net.

The shuttlecock (or shuttle) is a feathered projectile whose unique aerodynamic properties cause it to fly differently from the balls used in most racquet sports; in particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly than a ball. Shuttlecocks have a much higher top speed, when compared to other racquet sports. Because shuttlecock flight is stubbornly affected by wind, competitive badminton is always played indoors. Badminton is also played outdoors as a casual recreational activity, often as a garden or beach game.

Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport with five events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, in which each pair is a man and a woman. At high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness: players require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed, and precision. It is also a technical sport, requiring good motor coordination and the development of sophisticated racquet movements....

from yahoo's news....

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 22 (HealthDay News) -- People who eat quickly and until they're full are three times more likely to be overweight than others, a Japanese study says.

For the research, 1,122 men and 2,165 women, ages 30 to 69, filled out a diet history questionnaire about their eating habits, which revealed that 50.9 percent of men and 58.4 percent of women said they ate until they were full, while 45.6 percent of men and 36 percent of women said they ate quickly.

Those who said they ate quickly and until they were full had a higher body mass index (BMI) and total energy intake, and were three times more likely to be overweight than those who didn't eat until they were full and didn't eat quickly.

The study, published online Oct. 22 in the British Medical Journal, shows that eating quickly and until full has "a supra-additive effect on overweight," concluded Professor Hiroyasu Iso, of Osaka University, and colleagues.

Until recently, most adults didn't have the opportunity to consume enough energy to enable the body to store fat, according to background information in the study. But eating behaviors have changed due to increased availability of inexpensive food in larger portions, fast food, fewer families eating together, and eating while distracted (such as watching TV).

The study findings illustrate how current eating patterns in many nations may play a role in the epidemic of obesity, Elizabeth Denney-Wilson, of the University of New South Wales, and Karen Campbell, of Deakin University, both in Australia, wrote in an accompanying editorial.

They said doctors need to work with parents to encourage healthy eating habits in children, such as eating slowly, serving appropriate portion sizes, and eating as a family in a non-distracting environment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a member of the retrovirus family) that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections. Previous names for the virus include human T-lymphotropic virus-III (HTLV-III), lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV), and AIDS-associated retrovirus (ARV).[1][2]

Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The four major routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles, breast milk, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth. Screening of blood products for HIV has largely eliminated transmission through blood transfusions or infected blood products in the developed world.

HIV infection in humans is now pandemic. As of January 2006, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized on December 1, 1981. It is estimated that about 0.6 percent of the world's population is infected with HIV.[3] In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4–3.3 million lives, of which more than 570,000 were children. A third of these deaths are occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and increasing poverty.[4] According to current estimates, HIV is set to infect 90 million people in Africa, resulting in a minimum estimate of 18 million orphans.[5] Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.[6]

HIV primarily infects vital cells in the human immune system such as helper T cells (specifically CD4+ T cells), macrophages, and dendritic cells. HIV infection leads to low levels of CD4+ T cells through three main mechanisms: firstly, direct viral killing of infected cells; secondly, increased rates of apoptosis in infected cells; and thirdly, killing of infected CD4+ T cells by CD8 cytotoxic lymphocytes that recognize infected cells. When CD4+ T cell numbers decline below a critical level, cell-mediated immunity is lost, and the body becomes progressively more susceptible to opportunistic infections.
